What is the difference between Renewable Energy and Green Power ? Green power is a subset of renewable energy and represents those renewable energy resources and technologies that provide the highest environmental benefit. EPA defines green power as electricity produced from solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact small hydroelectric sources. Customers often buy green power to avoid environmental impacts and for its greenhouse gas reduction benefits.
What are the different types of Green Energy? The most commonly known Green Energy types are Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Hydro Energy, Geothermal Energy, Gasification and Steam Compression Treatment
WindEnergy Wind is a natural form of green energy. The sun heats the earth’s surface. The heat along with earth’s rotation creates winds. The wind flow patterns are determined by the earth's landscape. Humans harness the wind flow to generate electricity through the blades. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity. In order to generate more electricity, step-up gears are used to increase the number of rotations. To maximize efficiency, variable pitch is used to increase the amount of wind energy that has beencaptured. Wind energy has little effect on the environment. It is a natural renewable resource but is not used predominantly because a large capital expense.
Hydro Energy Water is another natural form of green energy. Seventy one percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Through exposure to sun light, water constantly moves through a vast cycle, evaporating from Earth's surface, forming clouds, precipitating as rain or snow, and flowing back down to the ocean. Because the water cycle is endless, hydropower is considered a renewable energy. As flowing water moves downstream, it is directed into a turbine that drives the generator and produces electricity.
Solar Energy The Sun's rays are a natural form of green energy. The Sun rays can be concentrated to produce large amount of heat. The heat energy is then used to generate electricity in a steam generator. Sun light can also be converted into electricity using semiconductor solar batteries. Solar energy is underused. One minute of sun light on Earth is enough to provide humans with energy for one year.
Geothermal Energy Underground steam is another natural form of green energy. The steam can be accessed by drilling steam wells in a process similar to oil drilling. The heat energy is used to turn steam turbines which drives the steam generator to produce electricity. Considering the size of the USA, Geothermal energy is an enormous underused heat and power resource.
Gasification & Steam Compression Treatment Each person in the United States generates about 4.5 pounds of waste per day, and almost 1 ton per year most of which is disposed in municipal solid waste (MSW). The City of Cleveland produces about 900-1500 tons of waste per day. Steam Compression can be used to turn the bulk of the MSW into fuel cell pallets to generate electricity. The steam Compression solution is a much cleaner and more cost effective than Landfill or Incineration Technology. On the other hand, the hazardous portion of the MSW is eliminated through Gasification. CPP is working closely with Princeton Environmental Group to resolve Cleveland’s MSW and provide the people of Cleveland with Greener living conditions.
Presently, the world's renewable energy sources are a small percent compared to conventional sources such as coal, oil and gas.
