June 26, 2025 – Cleveland – Cleveland Public Power crews successfully restored the Lake Road substation Tuesday evening reestablishing power to more than 3,000 customers.  CPP de-energized the substation early Tuesday morning following a battery fire.

Ammon Danielson, Commissioner of Cleveland Public Power applauded the work of CPP crews, “Our crews did a fantastic job in recovering a substation in less than 24 hours.” He explained, “This was an unexpected failure from a battery overstressed in the heat. It was one battery in a bank of twenty, which caused the entire bank to fail.”

He thanked the Cleveland Division of Fire for their work in getting the fire under control preventing further damage. The fire created a hazardous area, requiring remediation before the work of rebuilding the battery bank could begin.

Following the installation of new batteries, CPP crews were able to re-establish service to several substations served by the Lake Road substation. The final connections and testing occurred between 10 and 11 p.m. Tuesday evening restoring service to all customers.

CPP conducts monthly maintenance on the batteries, which is in line with industry best practices and they do not anticipate any new outages related to this situation.

Commissioner Danielson said, “I would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this situation, as well as the City departments and agencies and partners who helped in supporting our customers.”
