Green grass, and a green image of the earth

APRIL 22, 2022, CLEVELAND -- Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to promote environmental awareness. It was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, and is the birth of the modern environmental movement to many. The success of Earth Day is visible through its reach – the day is celebrated globally and recognized in more than 192 countries each year.
The primary message on Earth Day is, “We only have one earth, and she is very precious to us, so we have to treat her good. “ To that end, Cleveland Public Power is working to do our part in sustaining Mother Earth.
As a supporter, CPP celebrates Earth Day by supporting a sustainable lifestyle and investing in green power. We invest in solar photovoltaic arrays, anaerobic digestion, and hydropower projects to ensure that we do our part in making Cleveland a “green city on a blue lake.”
CPP has teamed up with Quasar Energy Group to produce electricity in an environmentally sound manner. This state-of-the-art facility in the Collinwood area utilizes organic waste to produce energy by anaerobic digestion to produce biogas composed of about 60% methane, the main component of natural gas. The biogas is cleaned, separated, and dried before being used to produce electricity, natural gas, and compressed natural gas. The biomethane is converted to electricity and fed directly to the power grid through CPP’s distribution system.

We also joined forces with American Municipal Power to invest in hydroelectric power plants along the Ohio River.

We are passionate about sustainability, and we work to share that with Cleveland youth with our Annual Solar Powered Car Race. The race held each October during Public Power Week is an opportunity to teach children about solar power and engage them. If you have elementary school children, check back in about a month for details on this year’s race.
