June 1, 2026 - Cleveland - For more than a century, the Warner & Swasey Building has stood as a landmark of Cleveland's industrial heritage. Now, after sitting vacant for decades, this historic MidTown property is beginning a new chapter — and Cleveland Public Power is proud to help power its future.
A $64 million redevelopment is underway to transform the 194,000-square-foot former manufacturing facility into a vibrant mixed-use, mixed-income community. The initiative will preserve the five-story historic landmark while creating 112 rental apartments in the first phase and approximately 28 units and 20,000 square feet of commercial space in the second phase.
Plans for the community feature studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments designed to serve individuals, seniors, at families at a wide range of incomes, including affordable housing units available at 30% to 60% of Area Median Income (AMI).
Originally constructed between 1904 and 1910, the Warner & Swasey Building was home to a world-renowned manufacturer of machine tools, telescopes, and precision instruments. Vacant since 1985, the building has long been viewed as a symbol of both Cleveland's rich history and its potential for renewal.
