Count on reliable street lighting
Cleveland Public Power (CPP) is committed to providing reliable streetlight service to the citizens and businesses of Cleveland. CPP owns and maintains approximately 67,000 streetlights. In May 2013, CPP began a pilot program to evaluate the energy savings, reduced maintenance costs and carbon emission reductions associated with LED streetlights. LED streetlights offer the possibility of cost savings, lowest energy consumption and high light output.
Cleveland’s goal is to be a thriving green city on a blue lake. CPP’s LED pilot project is a step towards making this goal a reality
What are LEDs
LED stands for light-emitting diode. A light-emitting diode is a small electric component that allows the flow of electricity in only one direction and produces light in the process. As a result, they are more efficient, more durable and provide higher energy savings than traditional lighting. Historically, LEDs have been efficient and long lasting as indicator lights in electronics but are rapidly evolving for use as general lighting.
Before: High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Lighting >>
In many communities, LED street lighting is increasingly preferred over the traditional high pressure sodium (HPS) street lighting. This is because LED streetlights use 26% less energy and have a life expectancy of 7– 10 years longer than HPS streetlights. However, not all LED lighting is created equal. A poorly designed LED streetlight can start to flicker and offer uneven light. For this reason it is important to select fixtures that meet strict efficiency, quality and life-time criteria. CPP’s LED Streetlight pilot program is designed to ensure that LEDs can meet Cleveland’s standard for roadway illumination while satisfying resident’s safety concerns.
